The First Ribera del Duero DO Winery

Protos means 'FIRST' in Greek. Founded in1927, it has known how to mature and maintain its fame over time.

A source of wine from the Peñafiel Region, a Valladolid town sustained by the River Duero. In 1927, a group of local vine growers got together with the firm commitment to create Protos: not only has it remained intact to this day, but it is constantly growing and maintains its position at the pinnacle of the international scene.In 1929, at the Barcelona Universal Exposition, it was awarded Gold Medals for its Red Wines. A starting point for life-long renown.

Protos now sells in over 91 countries on all continents. In Europe, primarily in Germany and in South America, and particularly in Puerto Rico, Brazil, Panama, Mexico and Peru.

The Winery’s Location and Architecture

Protos maintains 1,400 Hectares in the Ribera del Duero, growing the Tempranillo variety. The vineyards normally face South in order to benefit from more hours of sunshine.

The New Protos Winery, designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, Alonso Balaguer and Associated Architects, has the capacity for 1,000 Tons of Grapes, 3,500,000 Bottles and 5,000 Barrels. It is very near the original winery and therefore planned so as to connect with it underground.

Visually, its setting is most spectacular. Especially designed to generate interest when surveyed from Peñafiel Castle. The whole complex has been devised to create the best conditions for the Production of the Wine, including the ageing facilities (always underground).

Tourist Visits

It holds a privileged position beside one of the most important castles in the area (Peñafiel Castle), which houses a Wine Museum, and meets all the criteria for designation as a Wine Tourism centre. All visits include a tour of the two Wineries and a tasting of their wines.

• Individual or group reservations can be made, and visits require a minimum of 8 people
